Steadfast

“Spring Grass” by Alma Thomas,

National Portrait Gallery

You accomplish what You start.

You see things through, fully.

All the loose ends, You tie up.

You remember, when I forget.

You organize and design

All of me that appears to be

Chaos.

You use every resource on hand

To create beauty—

Nothing here is wasted,

Nothing seems to be trash.

You see the big picture

When all I can see is

This grass right in front

Of these feet.

You work miracles

Of subtle,

Seemingly

Useless

Things.

You “work everything for good,”

But it’s not a platitude

With You.

When I look back,

I see Your intention

In the dark parts,

Carving out

Spaces that I now need.

You make music with things

That don’t seem like instruments at all.

So “steadfast”

Really is more

To me

Than

“Resolutely firm

Or dutifully unwavering.”

You steadfastly

Make meaning

From nothing,

Utter darkness—

Ushering in light.

It’s who You are.
