How about you just pay the dentist first?

The minutia of life…

The laundry…

The bills…

That hide in the mail.

And when going to pay them

The links don’t work

You have to pay with a check

“Do you have cash?”

they say.

What’s cash?

No one has cash anymore

“Well, that’s the only way you can pay

That’s just the way it is,”

they say.

What is this whole big scam

To make us think we didn’t get an education

Because the buttons don’t work

The link is broke

The ticket you need to pay

It hasn’t come in yet

No, you can’t pay online

This one’s the kind

You can only pay in court

(Maybe they hope we’ll forget

when it’s “processing” in the mail

Well that really works on me

I think.)

Wait, snail mail is still a thing?

They’re trying to trick me again

Must be

Checks

Cash

Mail

Links

Pay by phone

What’s even HAPPENING?

They are out to get us

With hoops

Constantly

To jump through

Trapping us

Terrifying us

Telling us

That the secrets of life

Lie in being successful at

Such as these

Where’s the joie de vivre?!

Where’s the stimulant that will get me through?

Why can’t we all be like those routine rats

That just feel peace

Keeping up the crazed pace

Just doin’ their thing

Maintaining the universe

Spinning on through

Feeling contentment

Just plodding through

Why must we insist upon

Demand

Putting our feet in the sand

For something truly grand

Something dazzling

Pretty

Beautiful even

Life needing to be art

Needing to express something

Beyond this land

Truly how can we stand

Whatever this is?!

High school

Teaches you

To play the game

College

Shows you

How to make the roped-up

Maze

You graduate envying

The unschooled

Because they learned some

Common sense

Working and figuring out the world

You learn all manner of things

Really spending time

Spinning in the mind

Going on spiritual endeavors

Getting really clever

With theology

Your heart grows

Straining with the people

It is torn apart

Figuring out how to go about living

When you are reborn

You have to unlearn

All of it.

Undo

Untie

Loosen your grip

Everything they taught you growing up

Strip it–

You learn to be a child again

You really simplify

You enter the kingdom

You hear the King of Kings

And He says,

“Just pay the dentist already.”
