We’re Not Afraid, We’re Just Overstimulated

We’re not afraid, we’re overstimulated

Because we’re porous

And lots of things move through us

The truth will set you free.

But what’s the truth about “too much stimuli?”

Seems a little nebulous.

Especially for those who can’t relate

To feeling so crazed—

Too loud

Too bright

Too intense

Too emotionally spent

Too many vibes

What vibes?

Oh, you can’t feel them?

The chef of this restaurant is going through a hard time

Trying to keep up

With your siblings

Your parents

Coworkers

The kids

You chase around all day

And then you’re just exhausted

& spent

But no one else is

Because you haven’t listened to your body all day

The pace was too fast

You can only stay

At the party

Up to three hours

Before you hit a wall

The stimulation is normal for them

Am I defective?

Sick?

Emotionally stunted?

Someone else asks for a happy hour

Extroverts are supposed to have energy

Right now

At golden hour!

But instead, she’s in her bed

Recuperating from the day

No, he’s not sick

He’s spent,

Frazzled

She took more in

Than was natural

And didn’t have a choice

It must be that attachment style

Holding him back

From relating

In health

Must be it!

But then I hear the words from my Father and He’s saying:

“Just take a shower”

“Get in bed”

“Eat right now”

“You’re okay”

“You’re not even afraid”

Then I read a book about HSPs

And realize

20% of the population is just overstimulated

And needs to be put to bed.
